Two schools of thought surround the origins of the term Paddy Wagon.
The first came about in Lower Manhattan with the New York City Draft Riots of 1863 when working-class men mostly Irish or of Irish descent protested the recent laws passed by Congress to induct men to fight in the Civil War.
The protests turned violent as emotions quickly raged out of control and became a more complex race riot with anti-draft undertones.
While largely overwhelmed police and military worked to contain the crowds and one of the tools at hand was the Paddy Wagon named because so many Irish men were hauled away in them.
A second school of thought maintains that the Paddy Wagon got its name not for arresting so many Irish people but rather because so many policemen at the time were Irish or of Irish descent.
